Rauris Valley as a Stage

When the Rauris Valley Becomes a Stage: The Goldberg Jedermann as an Unforgettable Holiday Moment

This is truly something for everyone!
The play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is one of the most famous stage performances in the German-speaking world. However, the Goldberg Jedermann Rauris follows its own path and makes the story something truly special.

In Rauris, the theme of wealth and transience is closely linked to the history of gold mining. After all, the valley was once one of the most significant gold mining areas in Europe. This connection lends the performance a special authenticity. That is exactly what makes it so appealing: you are not just sitting in the audience, but experiencing a story that is deeply rooted in the region, creating a very special atmosphere.

The History of the Rauriser Jedermann

Jedermann was first performed in Rauris in 1953. It was staged to provide a cultural offering for guests in the Rauris Valley during the summer. And naturally, the incomparable backdrop of this open-air stage is perfectly suited for such a grand play.

Surrounded by historic trade houses and with the mighty “Pinzgau Cathedral” – as the Rauris church is called by locals in the valley and the surrounding area – in the background in all its beauty. The setting could hardly be more perfect for a performance than here.

Jedermann was performed in Rauris during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as in 1974.

It was then performed again in the summer of 2019 in a new version as the “Rauriser Goldberg-Jedermann.” Since then, a production followed in 2022, and this year, 2026, we look forward to another unforgettable summer of theater.

The Rauriser Goldberg-Jedermann is a Pinzgau dialect version set during the heyday of gold mining. However, the allegorical figures have largely been left in the original language, which gives the play a unique style.

When the Backdrop Becomes Part of the Performance

What personally excites us most about the Goldberg Jedermann is the atmosphere. The mountains around Rauris form an impressive backdrop that cannot be compared to any theater building in the world. When the evening hours settle over the Rauris Valley and the performance begins, a very special mood is created. It is one of those moments where you completely forget everyday life.

Anyone who takes a little time to learn about the history of the valley during their holiday in Rauris will quickly notice how strongly gold mining has shaped the region. Gold was mined here for centuries. This wealth brought prosperity, but also challenges – themes that fit the plot of Jedermann surprisingly well.

The Goldberg Jedermann Rauris takes up this historical connection and makes it tangible for visitors. This creates far more than a classic theater performance. It is a journey into the history of the valley and, at the same time, a timeless story about the truly important things in life. Many guests tell us after the performance that they were not only impressed by the actors, but above all by the unique connection between nature, history, and theater. It is precisely these experiences that make a holiday unforgettable.
