The Treasures of the Rauris Valley

The Rauris Valley is one of the most diverse valleys in the province of Salzburg

It is therefore hardly surprising that it bears so many different names. The following treasures are located just a short distance from Hotel Alpina and are waiting to be discovered by you.

The Valley of Vultures

A majestic species can be observed particularly well in the Hohe Tauern National Park. All you have to do is look up.
The Rauris Kruml Valley – also known as the “Valley of Vultures” – is famous for its royal inhabitants. With a bit of luck (and a pair of binoculars), you can see golden eagles, griffon vultures, and bearded vultures in the wild.

Even if you do not manage to spot one or more of these kings of the skies, you can observe falcons, owls, and eagles up close at the bird of prey show on the Hochalm.

The Valley of Gold

Rauris has a golden history. For a long time, the valley was considered the center of gold mining in Austria. Today, you and your family can try to relive those times. At two gold panning sites – surrounded by idyllic nature and, if you wish, under the guidance of experienced treasure hunters – you can search for gold.

The Valley of Springs

Anyone looking for water will find it in the Rauris Valley. More than 300 natural springs, impressive waterfalls, and crystal-clear mountain streams are home to this beautiful part of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Experience the splashing, rushing, pattering, and roaring in many different ways in the Rauris Valley.

Our tip: In the Hüttwinkel Valley, a short hike leads you directly to the Rauris UrQuell. This natural spring is a true place of power, inviting you to unwind with a small circular trail, drinking water fountains, and seating areas.

Rauris Virgin Forest

A true natural gem awaits you in Kolm Saigurn. The Rauris Virgin Forest is a centuries-old, natural forest that offers visitors over 80 dark moor pools, fallen spruces, stone pines, lush green mosses, and romantic clearings. Children in particular are always enthusiastic about the educational trail established there.

From the virgin forest, leisurely hiking trails lead towards the head of the valley. There, a breathtaking view opens up of the highest mountain in the province of Salzburg, with its weather station dating back to the imperial era. Here, high-altitude mountaineers meet leisure hikers over a serving of Kaiserschmarren in one of the ancient inns.
