To ensure your hikes in Rauris become a relaxed nature experience, we have put together some helpful tips for you.
To make your hiking day a true experience, some practical tips can help with planning. We ladies at the reception have collected the most important points for you.
Starting Early Pays Off
Especially in the summer months, it is advisable to set off in the morning, following the motto “The early bird catches the worm.” Temperatures are more pleasant, the paths are quieter, and the view of the surrounding mountains is often particularly clear. Additionally, thunderstorms are more common in the mountains in the afternoon. Those who start early enjoy nature more relaxed and are usually back in the valley in time to jump into our outdoor pool or enjoy a delicious ice cream on our sun terrace.
Choose the Right Tour
The Raurisertal offers hikes for every level. Families and leisurely hikers particularly appreciate the Seidlwinkltal with its gentle paths, rustic alpine pastures, and cozy refreshment stops.
Those who love alpine landscapes should definitely visit Kolm Saigurn. There, hikers can expect waterfalls, historic gold mining trails, and impressive high-mountain panoramas.
Nature lovers will get their money’s worth in the Krumltal. The “Valley of Vultures” is known for its impressive birdlife and, with a bit of luck, offers fascinating observations of bearded vultures or griffon vultures.
Or how about a leisurely tour to the Karalm, which is directly accessible from the hotel?
Do Not Underestimate Weather and Equipment
The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Even on warm summer days, a rain jacket and an additional warm layer should therefore be in your backpack. Good hiking boots with a secure tread are particularly important in alpine terrain.
Also recommended are:
- sufficient water
- sun protection
- a small snack for on the go
- hiking poles for longer descents
- offline maps or a hiking app – especially at higher altitudes, mobile reception is not always stable
Enjoy Huts and Alpine Pastures
A special part of every hike in the Raurisertal are the traditional alpine pastures and mountain huts. Many hiking trails lead to cozy refreshment stops with regional specialties such as Kaiserschmarrn, Kasnocken, Brettljause, or fresh buttermilk.
It is precisely the combination of exercise, nature, and genuine Salzburg hospitality that makes hiking in the Raurisertal so special.
Respect for Nature and Animals
Large parts of the Raurisertal are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Therefore, respectful interaction with nature is particularly important. Hikers should stay on marked paths, leave no litter, and keep dogs on a leash.
With a little calm and attention, you might be lucky enough to observe marmots, chamois, or even impressive birds of prey.
And now let’s talk about it: “Safe on Alpine Pastures – Correct Behavior Around Cows on Hiking Trails”

Hiking in Raurisertal means experiencing nature, enjoying fresh mountain air, and discovering the unique alpine landscape of the Hohe Tauern. Many hiking trails lead through grazing areas where cows and calves spend the summer. For some guests, encountering these animals is unfamiliar and sometimes associated with uncertainty. However, with a little distance, calm, and correct behavior, hikes through alpine areas are usually completely relaxed and safe.
Cows are an Important Part of the Alpine Landscape
The alpine pastures have shaped the landscape in Salzburger Land for centuries. Cows grazing in the meadows in summer are part of traditional alpine farming and are precisely what gives many hikes their special charm.
The animals are usually calm and accustomed to hikers. However, mother cows pay close attention to their calves – therefore, respectful distance is important.
Stay Calm and Relaxed
The most important tip is: stay calm. Cows react sensitively to hectic movements, loud behavior, or stress. Those who continue calmly usually appear completely unproblematic to the animals.
Hikers should:
- pass slowly and calmly
- maintain sufficient distance
- do not pet or feed animals
- avoid making hectic movements
In most cases, the animals move away on their own or remain standing calmly.
Do Not Leave Hiking Trails
The marked paths lead safely through alpine areas. Staying on the designated paths and respecting pasture fences avoids unnecessary disturbance to the animals.
Should a cow be directly on the path, it is advisable to pass calmly and with some distance, or to wait briefly until the animal moves aside.
Special Note for Dog Owners
Dogs can make cows more uneasy than humans. Therefore, special caution is required on alpine pastures:
- keep dogs on a short leash if possible
- maintain sufficient distance from cows and calves
- stay calm around nervous animals
Important to know: Should a cow actually approach, unleash the dog in an emergency so it can get away. Dogs are usually faster and can easily remove themselves.
Mother Cows Protect Their Calves
When calves are in the pasture, mother cows are particularly attentive. Therefore, one should never walk between a cow and its calf. Those who keep enough distance and pass calmly usually have no problems.
Consciously Enjoy Nature
Alpine meadows with grazing cows are among the most beautiful experiences when hiking in Raurisertal. Many guests find this pristine atmosphere particularly relaxing and typical for a holiday in the mountains. With mutual respect, the coexistence of humans and animals on the alpine pastures has worked very well for many years.
Cows on hiking trails are usually no cause for concern. Those who behave calmly, keep their distance, and respect the animals can enjoy hikes through alpine areas completely relaxed. This way, encountering the animals becomes a beautiful and authentic part of the mountain experience in Raurisertal.
Our Recommendation – a Hike to Palfneralm in Seidlwinkltal
Directions to the Starting Point
From Rauris, drive towards Wörth. There, at the second bridge, turn right into Seidlwinkltal and follow the road for about 6 kilometers to the Fleckweide car park. The last few kilometers are a well-maintained gravel road. From the Fleckweide car park, a well-developed hiking trail leads comfortably into the valley. The hike takes approximately 1 hour and is also very suitable for families.
The path runs along a wild mountain stream through the beautiful landscape of Seidlwinkltal. It is particularly pleasant that the path is wide and suitable for strollers.
At Palfneralm, homemade specialties and genuine Salzburg hospitality await you in the midst of nature. Regional products from their own farm are particularly popular.
The hike is perfect for:
- families with children
- leisurely hikers
- comfortable half-day tours
- hikes even in slightly changeable weather
Especially after rainfall, the waterfalls along the path are particularly impressive.
Alternative with Valley Bus
In summer, the valley bus also runs into Seidlwinkltal and stops at Palfneralm. This way, the hike can be shortened or combined individually with the other huts of Seidlwinkltal, the Litzelhofalm, the Rauriser Tauernhaus, and the Gollehenalm. All Information about the Valley Taxi
