Our first summer highlight: the Hengstauftrieb – a breathtaking spectacle
A very special highlight is the traditional Hengstauftrieb in the Raurisertal. Every year, this unique traditional event delights guests and locals alike and is one of the most beautiful traditions in Rauris. The Hengstauftrieb stands for living tradition and a close connection to nature. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to get to know the authentic, original Rauris—and at the same time enjoy an unforgettable summer day in the mountains.
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the annual Hengstauftrieb at the Bodenhaus mountain inn in Bucheben (near the end of the valley), Noriker breeding stallions compete under supervision for the role of lead stallion for the summer season. Afterwards, the animals are driven up to the Grieswiesalm for around 100 days of “summer retreat”. For spectators, it is a fascinating spectacle; for the animals, this gathering is necessary so they can spend a peaceful summer on the alpine pasture.
These are impressive moments in nature that you do not forget: when two lead stallions meet, a powerful contest begins for rank, respect and leadership of the herd. With proud posture, thundering hooves and imposing presence, the animals display their strength in a completely natural way.
It is not only about strength, but also instinct, experience and dominance. For visitors, this natural spectacle offers a fascinating insight into the animals’ lives and the mountains’ primal wildness. Especially in the Raurisertal, such special moments can be experienced up close—authentic, impressive and right in the heart of the untouched nature of Hohe Tauern National Park.
