The Rauris Gold Mountain for Everyone

In July and August 2026, the “Play of the Life and Death of the Rich Man” will be performed again in the Rauris Valley. The dialect version is by Franz Löser, based on the Rauris adaptation of Robert Reiter’s “Goldberg Jedermann”.

The mystery play “Jedermann” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal was last performed in Rauris in 1974. The dialect version by Austrian actor and dialect poet Franz Löser shifts the plot and the allegorical characters into the farming and middle-class world; the Rauris adaptation also places it in the valley’s gold-mining era. The “Goldberg Jedermann” feels authentic thanks to the Pinzgau dialect and the open-air stage on Rauris market square, surrounded by buildings from the heyday of gold mining in the 15th century—above all the imposing parish church, also known as the “Pinzgau Cathedral”.

Wealthy gold miner before divine judgment

The plot largely follows Hofmannsthal’s version: God commissions Death to bring Jedermann, a wealthy mine owner and farmer, before the Last Judgment. It is meant to remind people not to mock the poor and boast about their wealth. At one of Jedermann’s exuberant parties, Death appears and wants to take him away. After a tough struggle, he grants Jedermann a one-hour reprieve, but neither his friends nor his lover are willing to accompany him on his final journey. Even Mammon, rising from Jedermann’s gold chest, refuses to obey him. In mortal fear, Jedermann turns to God.
