Our first summer highlight: the stallion drive – a breathtaking spectacle
A very special highlight is the traditional stallion drive in the Rauris Valley. Every year, this unique traditional event delights guests and locals alike and is one of the most beautiful traditions in Rauris. The Hengstauftrieb stands for living customs and a close connection to nature. This is the perfect opportunity for visitors to get to know the authentic Rauris and experience an unforgettable summer’s day in the mountains.
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the annual stallion drive at Almgasthaus Bodenhaus in Bucheben (near the head of the valley), Noriker stallions will compete under supervision for the role of leading stallion for the summer season. The animals are then driven to the Grieswiesalm for around 100 days of “summer freshness”. This is a fascinating spectacle for the spectators, and for the animals this gathering is necessary in order to be able to spend a peaceful summer on the mountain pastures.
These are impressive moments that are never forgotten in nature: when two leading stallions meet, a powerful trial of strength for rank, respect and leadership of the herd begins. With their upright posture, thundering hooves and imposing presence, the animals show their strength in a completely natural way.
It’s not just about strength, but also about instinct, experience and dominance. For visitors, this natural spectacle is a fascinating insight into the life of the animals and the original wildness of the mountains. In the Rauris Valley in particular, you can experience such special moments up close – authentic, impressive and in the middle of the untouched nature of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
